In a forest neither here nor there, surrounded by the protection of faerie mists, the dryad lived. Today, he was sitting on the bank of a small stream, one foot, dangling into the cool water, green eyes pensive. " It is a good day. The sun is bright, the air is warm, and the water is cold. "
A pair of lavendar ovals, disembodied, watched from across the river bank. Then in a blink, they were gone.
Shimmerleaf paused, glanced across the river, sensing a presence. He rose and merged with the closest oak. He didnt reveal himself lightly, its how he survived for so long. " Someone watches.." came a sibilant whisper of leaves.
The eyes were now directly under the oaks branch. An untrained eye would not have seen them, but she had felt the presence of another faerie creature, and had seen it if only for a moment. So, a form appeared as if from thin air even as a slight breeze swirled the leaves at her feet. Barefoot. Dressed in brightly colored clothes, a bit oversized, she stood there barely five foot, smaller than some of the children of the lands, but female in form, with rich burgundy hair that cascaded to midback. The waifish little creature waved...and giggled.
He felt the presence of a fae creature as well, but was uncertain. He was a shy creature, Rowan, was spoken to, since she had been known to the wood, as Treefriend for years. Silent now, brownish eyes opened in the trunk of the oak, as he watched.
She dipped her head.. Then turned to look driectly at the tree, as if knowing where the eyes would appear. "not hurt you dryad friend, come out and play"
He emerged from the tree, slowly, looking at her hard, " Who are you?" his voice was quiet, uncertain,
The lavendar eyes swept over the dryad curiously. "I am called Sienna...by the traveling people....but my name in your tongue is..." She pursed her lips and a sound like tall grass rustling in the wind filled
his ears. The pungent scent of heather swirled around them and was gone. The slyph merely smiled.
He gave a nod, and let the leaves shifting in the breeze reveal his name.
Her oval shaped eyes looked up as the leaves shook, then looked back at the dryad. After a moment, she nodded. "It fits you" smile.
"How did you see the Wood? The mist keeps man away. " He was shaken by that smile, she knew smiles. "How do you know this?" His finger touched the side of her lips.
"sienna not a man, silly dryad" Hanging around the castle she had picked up their language quickly.
She spoke in a merry little voice, like tinkling wind chimes. "Nae live here, live on the hills of heather, sometimes stay in the garden of Golden horn. I didst saw the mists....not have seen this grove before...come to look" The slyph giggled when he touched her lips. "You shine in the sun" She reached out to touch his hair, which did have a healthy green glow in the afternoon sunshine.
"The sun nourishes me, as does the rain. And the land...Sienna is fae.." Nodding, " She is not man..." then he paused, regarded her with more interest.
"Shimmerleaf.." Still practicing her speech she used his common tongue name "...need sun and rain and earth to grow...but need wiiiinnnnd!..." with this she gave a spin, which rustled the leaves as she spun.
Hand reached to touch her hair, it slid through his fingers like a will-o-the whisp as she spun. "Need wind to bring the rain."
And so would begin a friendship that would grow as naturally as, well, the wind and the trees.
