The deep freeze of winter has now set in deeply upon our kingdom. The crone is guiding us through a time of rest and reflection, a time to prepare our bodies and minds for the coming rebirth of spring. You would think that winter, which can be such a beautiful time of year with glittering snow and glistening ice, would inspire within us something other than lethargy, depression, and hesitance. However, this is not always the case… my dear friends; I give you the winter blues.
While this may not be true for everyone, many people find winter a tough season to get through. Of course we have Yule and the various other winter festivals that give us time and energy to celebrate friends and family, but after that hustle and bustle has settled down and the cold has time to creep into our bones many of us slip into the winter doldrums. We want to sleep, we seek solitude, we eat things that bring us comfort rather than energy and nourishment, thinking creatively is hard (for muns too, it seems!), and we just want to be ho hum until warm weather shows it’s lovely face again.
Luckily, there are some things you can do to help ease the winter blues. Try some of these out and take comfort… when winter wraps its cold fingers around us… spring can’t be far behind!
Get outside and get some sunlight! Even though it’s cold, take some time to enjoy the outdoors. The sun on your face will cheer you up and make you feel better.
Brush up on your training: exercise gets your endorphins fired up. It keeps you in shape for spring and summer pursuits and will give you more energy during the dark, dreary winter.
Eat your vegetables! While it’s tempting to eat nothing but honeycakes and cocoa (to warm you up and comfort you), it’s important to partake of rabbit food as well. There are plenty of fresh, winter vegetables available to all of us: winter squashes, greens, roots, and other delectable delights. Give your body what it is really craving: nourishment.
Last, but certainly not least, rest well. I know I said earlier that winter can make us lethargic and sleepy, but it is important to give our body’s time to rest and recuperate. Let’s face it: in Horn we play hard when we can… we deserve a little R&R. Nap if you need to, snuggle up with the one you love, and dream a little dream of spring!
