There had been much happening this month, with all the earthquakes and invasion and things. The healer had found time to gather seeds from the far reaches of the kingdom, where she had several gardens growing. With her new found supplies, she brought them back to the base tent camp and wandered about half a mile away from the base tent. Setting up a square with stones, about 10x10 in diameter.
With her gardening tools, she began to loosen and areate the soil to make it soft and easy for plants to grow, digging up the rocks that might have gotten in the way and breaking the clumps of clay that might have formed due to the earthquake. Smiling once that was all done, she began to plant her seeds in rows.
First she planted Anise. Anise leaves can be used in salads and as a garnish. Use the seeds to flavor confections such as cakes and cookies. Oil from anise seed is used in medicine. Not to mention that it was also used in popurri. So by winter they would hopefully they'd have a fresh stock.
The next plant she planted was Borage. borage flowers and leaves are used to give a cool, cucumber-like flavor to summer drinks. Bees are attracted to the borage plant which would help polinate the flowers that grew and it was also used medicinally for fevers.
After the Borage was Hyssop. Hyssop was a hardy plant and would grow in almost the worst soil so she knew this would grow quickly from a seed. Hyssop's pungent leaves are used to flavor liqueurs and sometimes are used as a condiment. Oil obtained from the leaves is used in making perfume. Not to mention all the medicinal properties that hyssop had.
The last plant that would be planted in this area was Fennel. Fennel seeds are used as a condiment. The leaves have an anise-like flavor and the stems can be eaten like celery. Seeds can be used in cheese spreads and vegetable dishes. And like the other plants had medicinal properties otherwise shuku wouldn't have chosen it!
Once all the plants were done, she took a step back to look at the freshly made garden with a smile. They would be well supplied in the winter now.
